rofessional and managerial employees find that their collective views as represented to their employers by AMPS are much more powerful than any individual or in-house staff association can achieve. This is because AMPS is an independant union with well defined legal rights and a broad experience across many industries.
The Association is governed by a Governing Board elected from the general membership, which together with Branch Committees and Industrial Sections, also elected from the membership, determine policy at all levels, including negotiations with employers. The full time officials and staff, headed by the Executive Secretary, provide the professional expertise in the field of industrial relations to implement these policies on behalf of the members.

MPS can:
Negotiate the best salaries and working conditions by putting forward well argued and well presented cases. AMPS always attemps to secure negotiating agreements in which the final stages, in the case of failure to agree, are mediation and binding abitration, rather than industrial action.
Agree grievance and disciplinary procedures with employers, and represent individuals or groups within these procedures to ensure a full and fair hearing without any fear of intimidation.
Provide an apolitical voice to influence government policy in the United Kingdom and policies in the European Community regardless of which party is currently in office. It is the only Trade Union to provide financial support for the Parliamentary Science Office and is represented on the Parliamentary and Scientific Committee.
Maintain a professional approach and close liaison with similar groups in Europe.
Nominate members to sit on Employment Tribunals and Area Health Authorities.
